Day 1A at Derby Lane

Hey everyone!

The “Day One” events are underway throughout the state! We’re here for the first event at Derby Lane, which is being hosted by 97X! Today’s event is, of course, the same as all “Day Ones” with a $500 + $50 buy-in.

Playing in today’s event is Alexander Gregory, who chopped for the win last year, with Charlie Miller Jr.

We talked with Alexander today and, of course, had to ask if he was going to win it again this year:

“I don’t think that you can think of that on Day one. If I play my game, I’ll have a good shot at competing.”

In a cool little aside, after last year’s Florida Million he satellited into the WSOP Main Event through a $75 buy-in on Full Tilt. He got to play on the ESPN featured table on Day 1C. No cash for him in this round, but we’re wishing him luck in the Florida Million II.

Florida Million Finishing Positions

We would like to thank everyone for playing and following along with the tournament! Play resumed on Day 3 with 18 players. There were early talks of deals, but play continued until there were 9 players remaining.

An agreement was made to establish minimum payouts for each player, to leave an extra $50,000 and the trophy up for play and to give $10,000 to the staff involved for the tournament. Play ended with the final 2 players coming to their own agreement on the trophy and prizes

Florida Million: A Championship Event Created for Florida Poker Players

The Inspiration
Every year, poker players from around the world gather in Vegas to compete to be the World Champion of poker. To play, these players figure out a way to get their $10,000 buy-in and ensure that they have two weeks to dedicate to chasing the dream. It’s a fantastic event, with collaboration amongst facilities in a state that fully embraces poker.

Creating a Championship Event for Florida poker.
If you’ve played poker in Florida, you know that we do things a little differently down here. Regulations are different, with maximum buy-ins, 12 hours of play per day and tightly regulated table requirements. We also don’t have the number of pros that Vegas has, so taking a week to two weeks off to play poker is a challenge for the majority of Florida’s players.

Tough Competition, Bragging Rights and Lots of Money
We may have different regulations, but six poker room managers from around the state agreed that we can offer the core features of a championship event: tough competition, bragging rights for the winner and a big payday.

Structuring the Event for Florida Poker Players
So, we devised an event that would allow for a huge field with a $500 +$50 buy-in that would work with the Florida law and around the schedules of the majority of Florida poker players.

No Florida poker room can handle 3,600* players at one time, so the tournament has to be divided up. Rather than bringing a massive number of players to cycle through multiple day ones in one room, we felt that the players would benefit from being able to play in the rooms closest to them.

*3,600 is not any form of official number or expectation. It is the theoretical maximum number of players that would be allowed if all 6 locations ran 4 events of 150 players.

How it’s Different
While other major events have multiple day ones, they are usually made up of a large group of pre-registered players that are divided up amongst multiple days. The Florida Million is different in the fact that players can continue registering in “Day One” events until they reach the 10%. This allows for progressive growth of the prize pool and enables players to have multiple entry points into the event.

Excited for the Future
This is the first Florida Million Tournament and the first of its kind in Florida. We have gotten some great feedback from staff members and players from throughout the state, so we feel that this will be the beginning of a fantastic series of our own.

New Blog for the Florida Million Community

We are creating this space to address the questions that are popping up around the tournament and to have a quick way to share information about the events.

We are a week away from the first “Day One” Event, which will be played in the Daytona Kennel Club on February 28th at 1pm. This event is listed on their website and you can see a full list of scheduled events on the Florida Million “Day One” Events listing.

There are many questions surrounding the event. We are trying to make every effort to clarify how the event will be run, but please fire away with questions here.

The most popular question is what the tournament will resume at on April 10th. Blinds for day 2 will revert to the lesser of 1k-2k, or the lowest blind level achieved by any field. Basically the blinds will back up when play begins at Derby Lane.
